BAR Standard – General Information
The Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) consists of a suite of risk based standards focusing on the aviation operations conducted under a contract. This includes fixed wing and rotary wing, onshore and offshore, passenger, cargo, RPAS and many specialized activities within this scope of aviation. The standards are presented in a bowtie format for contextual understanding of the way threats are identified and controlled with corresponding recovery and mitigation measures should an accident occur.
The BAR Standards are suitable for the onshore resource sector, offshore oil & gas, windfarm, marine pilot transfer, humanitarian, government, corporations and defence organizations.
All standards are supported by an independently delivered audit and registration program from the Flight Safety Foundation.
BAR Standard – Contracted Aircraft Operations
The BAR Standard provides companies the minimum requirements for performing risk based management of the aviation operations. The Standard is risk based, presented in the bowtie format and supported with detailed Controls & Defences for each of the bowties and Appendices.
BAR Standard for Offshore Helicopter Operations (BARS OHO)
The BARSOHO is aligned with the HeliOffshore Safety Performance Model (SPM) and further details the Accident Threats, Enablers & Survival Goals (Defences) for offshore helicopter operations. Additional material is provided for helicopter marine pilot transfer (MPT)/transport hoist and medical evacuation (Medevac)/Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.
BARS for RPAS Operations
The BARS for RPAS Standard is a risk based standard and presented in the bowtie format and supported with detailed controls and defences for a range of RPAS operations. Additional activity specific bowties with controls/defences are provided for Underground and/or confined space RPAS operations, BVLOS RPAS Operations, Offshore Installation/Maritime RPAS Operations and RPAS External load operations.
