Navigating Regulations at Low Altitude: How Sky Movies Keeps Control

In specialized aviation operations such as aerial photography and laser scanning, flying low and slow requires more than skilled piloting; it demands precise documentation control. For Sweden’s Sky Movies, Web Manuals provides the digital foundation to manage modified aircraft, regulatory oversight, and safe flight operations under EASA’s frameworks.

Capturing Scandinavia from the Sky

Since 2007, Sky Movies has provided high-resolution aerial photography and thermographic inspections across Scandinavia. Using a fleet of two aircraft, the company supports municipalities, utilities, and engineering projects with detailed imagery and mapping data.

Each mission requires careful coordination and specialized equipment, from high-sensitivity thermal cameras for district heating inspections to advanced laser scanners for 3D mapping.

These flights are often conducted at night and at low altitudes, demanding both precision and discretion. To minimize environmental impact, Sky Movies uses single-engine aircraft, reducing emissions and noise during operations.

Made Compliance Simpler

While Sky Movies operates under EASA’s general aviation framework, its work involves unique operational conditions and modified aircraft. Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) are required to install specialized imaging equipment, which adds another layer of regulatory oversight.

Keeping documentation structured, up to date, and ready for inspection became essential, particularly as the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) requires clear access to operational manuals and modification records.

“When we heard how Web Manuals simplified compliance for another airline, we decided to try it, and now we have total confidence that every document and regulation is up to date, all in one easy system,” says Michael Lyckholm, Sky Movies.

With Web Manuals, Sky Movies gained a centralized platform for managing all manuals and compliance references. Inspectors from Transportstyrelsen can now log in directly through Web Manuals’ secure reader portal, reviewing documentation instantly and eliminating the need for back-and-forth communication.
